Ancient Culture

Vanuatu has an ancient culture that is steeped in mysticism and black magic. Yet the country has evolved into one of the highest Christian-per-population countries in the world, next to Somoa.

Vanuatu is World’s Happiest Country: Study - Monday 17th July, 2006 (Agence France-Presse)

The tiny South Pacific Ocean archipelago of Vanuatu is the happiest country on Earth, according to a study published measuring people’s wellbeing and their impact on the environment.

According to Adrienne Wilson, writing for Gadling.com on July 15th 2006, “The Happy Planet Index used life expectancy and environmental footprint to rank the countries”. Vanuatu was ranked the greatest place to live, followed by Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica and Panama.

It is as if the modern world swirls around these people and leaves them in their untouched. On the Outer Islands you find small pockets of people who still live in the traditional way of life, trading with pig tusks, ceremonial mats and kava, a local drink.

These people have no switch to turn on at night to give them light. There is no motor car to take them to the nearest shop for even the most basic supplies.

In Vanuatu there is no free education. Many of these children will never leave their isolated island villages. High School education is beyond them, as they are a cashless society. YouMe Support Foundation provides non-repayable education grants for these children.

Much of Vanuatu is still an untouched wilderness and a great place to explore. You will be overwhelmed by these friendly, happy people.

Just have a flexible timetable, because the small plane may not be able to land through adverse weather conditions. It is an experience you will never forget.
